Professor Alasdair Cairns

Biography:

Since 2016 Alasdair has been Professor & Director of the Powertrain Research Centre, in the Engineering Faculty of the University of Nottingham. He previously held a number of posts at Brunel University, London, as Deputy Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, Director of Teaching and Learning, and Professor of Automotive Engineering.

Alasdair also has valuable private sector experience, for example as Principal Research & Development Engineer with MAHLE Powertrain, and as Senior Research & Development Engineer with Cosworth Technology. He’s also a member of Nottingham’s Fluids and Thermal Engineering Research Group.

Alasdair’s interests encompass numerous aspects of sustainable propulsion, with active research in fuels for sustainable heavy duty IC engines; advanced powertrain thermal management; life cycle analysis of propulsion; automotive energy recovery systems; and powertrain lightweighting.
