Professor Doug MacFarlane

Professor of Chemistry, Monash University

Interests:

Direct electrochemical production of ammonia. Electrocatalysis. Nitrogen reduction mechanisms. Applications of Green ammonia. The chemistry and application of organic salts including in electrochemistry applications in renewable energy storage.

Biography:

Doug is a Professor of Chemistry at Monash University in Australia. He is also an Honorary Professor at Queens in Belfast and spends a couple of months each year in UK and Ireland.

He was elected to the Australian Academy of Science in 2007 and the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering in 2009. His group was recently awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry’s 2023 Horizon Prize for Environment, Sustainability and Energy.

He recently co-founded Jupiter Ionics to scale up the ammonia production technology his group developed. The company claims that its “breakthrough electrolytic cell is the first of its kind to stably produce ammonia with 100% selectivity.” Doug is currently serving as Jupiter Ionics’ Chief Technology Officer.
